Overcoming Challenges and Staying Grounded While Building a Legacy Through Portraits

As I sit down to reflect on this incredible project, the goal of capturing 3,000 portraits in two years looms both exhilarating and daunting. From 27 participants so far to 3,000, the leap feels massive, but it’s a dream worth chasing. I know the purpose behind this endeavor is greater than myself. It’s about raising awareness of the beauty, strength, and interconnectedness of our identity, culture, heritage, and the legacy we’re leaving for the next generation.

The triumphs are plentiful. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the excitement and enthusiasm people have shown. They believe in this project—they know it matters. And that belief, that shared understanding of its importance, is what fuels me to keep moving forward even when the road feels steep.

But let’s talk about the challenges because, honestly, they’re real. There are two major hurdles:

  1. Finding participants: How do I reach the right people who are ready to share their stories and be a part of this legacy?

  2. Scheduling and keeping sessions: Life happens. People are busy, and rescheduling can become a cycle. After a few reminder emails, how do I gently let go without losing hope? How do I keep the momentum alive?

Staying Grounded in Faith

When I start to feel overwhelmed, I remind myself of one powerful truth: God brings the right people into this project. I just need to keep looking up to the heavens while staying grounded on the solid rock of my salvation. Faith has been my anchor in every step of this journey, and I trust that the people who are meant to be part of this project will show up—sometimes unexpectedly.

Brainstorming New Strategies

To overcome these challenges, I know I need to research and test out some fresh strategies and collaborators.

Here are a few ideas I’m exploring:

  • Community Partnerships

  • Storytelling Events

  • Social Media Campaigns

Let’s Collaborate!

This project is all about community, and I can’t do it alone. If you’re reading this and feel inspired, I’d love to hear from you! Do you know someone who would be a great fit for this project? Or would you like to collaborate—whether it’s by helping spread the word, connecting me to potential participants, or volunteering in another way? Let’s work together to make this dream a reality.

Every recommendation, idea, or connection makes a difference!

Walking Away When Needed

Letting go is hard, but I’m learning that it’s part of the process. After several reminders, I’ll prayerfully walk away, trusting that if they’re meant to be part of this project, the door will reopen later.

Your Ideas Are Welcome!

If you’ve made it this far, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Have you faced similar challenges in a big project? How did you tackle them? This journey is a collaborative effort, and I’m open to all the ideas, wisdom, prayers and encouragement I can gather.

Here’s to dreaming big and trusting that with faith, creativity, and a whole lot of hard work, 3,000 portraits will become a reality.

With gratitude and hope,
